Walnut Hill Church will be hosting BCC group rides as well as a family fun ride, followed by brunch at the church on Saturday, July 19, 2014. The event will feature BCC rides at A, AB, B, and BC paces, which will depart the church at 8:30 am, as well as a family fun ride and a C pace BCC ride on Walnut Hill Road beginning at 9 am.. 7 miles of Walnut Hill Road will be closed to traffic from 9-10 am that morning.
Brunch and desserts will be served by members of the church to all participants from 10 am – 12:30 pm.
There is no charge for the ride or for the brunch, however voluntary donations will be accepted. The congregation of the church has a fundraising goal of $3,000 for the event. All amounts raised at the event will be contributed to the Bluegrass Cycling Club to purchase bikes for refugees through the Kentucky Refugee Ministries. Anyone making a donation of $25 or more will receive a tee shirt.
There will be presentations from the Kentucky Refugee Ministries and Mike Ward, pastor of Walnut Hill Church will bless the bikes. Some refugees who received bikes from the BCC in the past will attend the event and will participate in the family fun ride.
The church was established in 1785 to serve religious needs of the early pioneers. In 1791 a school was opened for Latin, Greek and the Sciences. The original church was a log cabin and the present church was constructed 1801 on land donated by Mary Todd Lincoln’s grandfather Levi Todd. The grounds are a melody of rolling hills, large old shady trees, and a historic cemetery.
